General

Cordaware bestinformed and its components can easily and reliably be operated in practically every variant of Virtualized Content. In the following chapters, you will find detailed information on how to operate Infoserver and Infoclient in Virtualized Environments and information on good practice for implementation.

Variants of Virtualized Content

Basically, there are two types of Virtualized Content: Desktop/Server Virtualization and Application Virtualization. Operating the Infoserver in a Virtual Environment is only recommended for Server Virtualization, whereas the Infoclient can be operated in practically any variant of Virtualized Content. Therefore, the following topics are entirely dedicated to ways and options for providing the Infoclient in Virtual Environments.

Identification of Infoclients in Virtualized Environments

For better identification of Infoclients in Virtualized Environments, following items in the Connection Overview are available:

RemoteSession

This item indicates if the Infoclient was started in a remote session.

SessionClientName

This item displays the computername, from which the remote session was started. If the Infoclient does not run in a remote session, then the local computername will be displayed.

Passive

This item indicated if the Infoclient is running in Passive Mode.

TempActiveAllowed

This item indicates, if the Infoclient is configured to run in TempActive Mode in case Passive Mode is active.

TempActive

This item indicates if the Infoclient is currently in TempActive Mode.

For more information on the Passive Mode, please see chapter Application Virtualization.

Challenges of operating the Infoclient in Virtualized Environments

The most common challenges are Licence Management and handling of Dynamic Channels in any variant of Virtualization. Licence Management here relates to the number of Infoclient instances & licenses consumed by a user when using Virtualized Content from a Content Cloud (e.g. Citrix Published Application with loadbalancing in a Serverfarm). Typically, each user-session on each server consumes one licence. In case a user has several sessions on different servers, then a user consumes one licence for each session. Also when using a Virtual Desktop, more licences then on a regular Desktop computer will be consumed. In the chapters Desktop Virtualization and Application Virtualization, you will find configuration options to effectively minimize the number of licenses consumed by a user while maintaining a high level functionality, especially in relation to Dynamic Channels.

Installation Notice

In order to provide the Infoclient in any Virtual Environment, simply run the installation file bestinformed.exe. and select the component Infoclient. This applies to the installation on servers hosting Virtualized Applications as well as the installation on master-images for Virtualized Desktops. Once installed, the Infoclient will automatically start in each user-session in any of these environments.

Configuration Notice

We strongly recommend to either deactivate access to the Infoclient QuickConfiguration (ShowOnTaskbar=false) or to explicitly diasble the items Address and Port in the QuickConfiguration when providing the Infoclient for Virtualized Applications since all users connected to a server will use the same Infoclient.ini, and any changes commited through the QuickConfiguration will apply for all users on that server.

Infoclient on Logon-Screen

For performance and security reasons, it is advisable to deactivate the Infoclient for the Logon-Screen on servers hosting Virtualized Applications. This can be achieved by setting the item UserdesktopOnly=true in configuration file if the Infoclient.

Static Display

If required, the banner can be displayed statically. In this case, the banner won't move permanently, but will "jump" along the whole screen width within a certain interval. The optical impression for the user is, that the ticker remains static for a certain time and then changes its content in certain intervals. This might be of interest in case the banner can't be displayed smoothly due to slow refresh-rates (small bandwidth, limited amount of frames/pictures per second that can be streamed to the client).

Settings

To statically display the ticker, you have to set following options in the GENERAL section of the Infoclient.ini:

How to set these settings is shown in the chapter Configuration.

ScrollAmount=0

This value indicates the Pixelstep of the ticker, i.e. the progression-value of the ticker in pixels. Entering the value 0 automatically adopts the width of the screen resolution.

Speed=10000

This value is the refresh-rate of the banner in milliseconds. Value 10000 therefore represents a refresh-rate of 10 seconds. The effect now is, that the ticker is moved every 10 seconds for the width of your screen-resolution, the ticker now is practically static.
